Euromaidan Towel
Several years ago, my friend Irene Hornich and I started a small business called Ptashka Creative Designs. We designed cards, stationery and other small gift items with a Ukrainian flair. One of the more adventurous items we designed was a beach towel. It featured a pair of sunglasses with a relfection of the Ukrainian flag in the lens. Beneath the glasses was the slogan, “You are my sunshine” written in Ukrainian. We sold enough to cover our costs and a little more, but in the end we were left with several boxes of towels. Last year when the events on the Maidan in Kyiv began, Irene suggested that we send some of the towels that we had left to Ukraine to be used there. One of our towels ended up pinned to the ‘Christmas Tree’ structure at the Maidan. Irene and I were both thrilled to see it there, and because of that, the demand for the towel increased. Of course, by this time, we didn’t have a lot of towels left, but what we did have left, we sold and donated the proceeds to the families of the heroes who lost their lives at the Maidan.
