A surprising purchase
Just before Christmas 2014, I participated in a Christmas Bazaar at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Oakville. I was a little hesitant to go because our choir, Svitanok Women’s Choir from Hamilton was also having a Christmas bazaar the next day, and I had agreed to be there too. Regardless, I came with my cards and set up my table the way I always do. During the day I had noticed two young men coming by, looking at my work and me, and whispering to each other. I really didn’t pay much attention…everyone is entitled to their opinion, until later in the day, they came back and started to question me about the cards. “Do you make the cards from photographs?” “Where do you find the shirts?” “How do you reproduce the cards and from what?” etc.etc. I told them that each card has a story and I paint each shirt in watercolour, marker and/or ink and have the art made into cards. They were delighted and bought a framed grouping of my cards as a gift for a friend. Then, they asked me if I wanted to know who the friend was. I said ‘of course.” It was for the newly appointed Minister of Finance for Ukraine, Natalie Jaresko. I was flabbergasted to say the least. I will be at the upcoming Easter Bazaar at St. Joseph’s Church on April 4…I wonder who I will meet next.
